Is Vosne-Romanee the beating heart of the Cote d’Or? Few would dispute that some of the greatest wines in all of Burgundy comes from this commune. The commune of Vosne-Romanee is located between Flagey-Echezeax and Vosne-Romanee with vineyards at altitudes of 250-300 meters above sea level. Originally named just Vosne, in 1866 the village took the suffix of its arguably most famous vineyard, ‘Romanee’.

The commune of Vosne-Romanee is often grouped together with neighbouring commune Flagey-Echezeaux, since Flagey only has its two Grand Crus (Grands Echezeaux and Echezeaux) everything else is sold as Vosne-Romanee.

Thus if you include Flagey-Echezeaux’ two Grand Crus, Vosne-Romanee has eight Grand Crus in total. The six Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanee are: La Romanee, Romanee-Conti, Richebourg, La Grande Rue, Romanee-Saint-Vivant and La Grande Rue.

And with the famed Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC) either owning the monopoly, or a principal part, of all of these vineyards, it is no wonder that the commune has arguably, the greatest reputation of all.

The Vosne Romanee Premier Crus also perform at the highest level in Burgundy – and in the right vintages and from the right makers are capable of Grand Cru quality – particularly Malconsorts (which contends for Grand Cru status - sharing a long border with La Tache), but also Beaumonts, Suchot, Gaudichots, and Les Brulees. Much harder to find is Clos Parantoux, which commands extremely high prices.
