Rasteau

Overview

The village of Rasteau is located in the southern Rhone valley, around 24 km northeast of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Vineyards are south facing, at around 200 meters altitude and the soils are mainly made up of clay limestone but also with marl and sandstone in some places.

Rasteau was awarded AOC status for its red wines in 2010, prior to which, these were sold under the Cotes-du-Rhone Villages appellation. Rasteau is also known for production of Vin Doux Naturel fortified wines.

Key Grape Varieties

Since 2010, the Rasteau appellation can produce red-wines, which are usually  dominated by Grenache, and accessorized with a combination of Syrah and Mourvedre.

Food Pairing

Full bodied and richly flavoured red Rasteau pairs well with hearty foods, like braised meat, sausages, stews, casseroles, and pie. Barbecues is also a great pairing, as is roast duck and turkey, along with Mediterranean accompaniments like dried herbs – rosemary, thyme, oregano – and olive sauce, roasted aubergines, and peppers.
