Coonawarra

Overview

Coonawarra is one of Australia’s most famous and long standing red wine regions, located in the heart of South Australia’s Limestone Coast Zone and famous for varietal Cabernet Sauvignons of classic cassis and blackcurrant aromatics, along with cigarbox, cedar, and the characteristic Australian eucalyptus notes, which sometimes is particularly emphasized in wines from here. The climate is continental with very warm summers, and the soil is red ironstone over limestone, which gives Cabernet Sauvignon of a certain bold power and richness.

Key Grape Varieties

Coonawarra’s Terra Rossa soil is widely considered to be the greatest terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia. Terra Rossa is limestone based and turned red by oxidation of iron in the topsoil, and its suitability to Cabernet Sauvignon is in large part due to its extremely well-draining composition. Coonawarra is also home to some excellent straight Shiraz.
