Nuits-Saint-Georges

Overview

A long, and narrow, and most southerly section of the Cote de Nuits which itself was named after the major town of this section of the Cote, the southern named after the larger town of Beaune. The vineyards become narrower through this most southerly section of the Cote de Nuits making it a long commune split into three sections – north of the town, south of the town to Les St Georges itself, and beyond into what is called Premeaux-Prissey. The soils change as you travel south giving different, but often fascinating varying expressions of Pinot Noir.

One of the fascinating quirks of Nuits is the white wine from a mutation of pinot noir Pinot Noir called “Pinot Gouges” after Henri Gouges who discovered it in his Clos des Porrets vineyard and propagated it.

The wines can be sturdy and long-lived, with those neighbouring Vosne-Romanee to the north often showing more grace, with fruit and elegance, while those around Les St-Georges are richer in structure and perhaps the best of the commune.

Classification

Although Nuits has no Grand Crus, there are no fewer than thirty-three Premier Cru vineyards, many of very high quality. There have long been arguments that Les Saint-Georges should have always been one, with Les Vaucrains just above it on the hillside also a contender.
