Vougeot

Overview

At 50-odd hectares it is the largest clos vineyard in Burgundy, and is formed by accretion by the historic Abbey de Citeaux commencing in the twelfth century, although when it was enclosed is up for debate. It remained one piece after the French Revolution but had over 40 owners in 1920 and nearly 80 today.

The top of the vineyard counts Grands Echezaux and Le Musigny as neighbours while the Premier Crus of the village Vougeot border the north, and village appellation vineyards of Flagey-Echezaux the south. Despite this it would be overly-simplistic to say that the higher section is best. After decades when some decidedly disappointing wines wore the livery of Clos de Vougeot, there are now some outstanding wines coming from this famous vineyard.

Classification

There have been arguments for decades about the deservedness of Clos de Vougeot’s Grand Cru status. Most of the Vougeot village appellation is Grand Cru status ‘Clos de Vougeot’. But we also find Les Petit Vougeots which is a very good Premier Cru, and the more general Vougeot Premier Cru.
