The producer

It is rare to find a historic German estate that so consistently defines both its region and grape variety, but Weingut Robert Weil has stood as one of the great reference points for Riesling in the Rheingau since its founding in 1875. Based in Kiedrich, the estate has long been synonymous with precision, longevity, and an uncompromising focus on site expression, earning international acclaim across styles from dry to noble sweet.

At the heart of the domaine lies the Kiedricher Grafenberg, one of the Rheingau’s most celebrated vineyards, whose steep slopes, high elevations, and phyllite and loess soils produce Rieslings of remarkable structure and clarity. The estate’s Grosses Gewächs wines represent the pinnacle of its dry production, showcasing the interplay of minerality, tension, and depth that defines great Rheingau Riesling. Combining centuries of heritage with meticulous modern viticulture, Robert Weil consistently delivers benchmark wines that offer both distinction and exceptional long-term value within the top tier of German wine.

The wine

Fruit for Weingut Robert Weil’s Kiedricher Grafenberg Riesling GG is sourced exclusively from the estate’s holdings in the steep, high-elevation Grafenberg vineyard above the village of Kiedrich in the Rheingau. The site is predominantly south-facing, benefitting from excellent sun exposure while maintaining cool air flow, and is defined by poor, well-drained phyllite and loess soils that naturally limit vigour and intensify mineral expression. Grapes are harvested by hand and fermented primarily in stainless steel, with a small proportion in large, neutral oak casks, followed by extended lees ageing to build texture and depth.

The wine is shaped by the tension of its site, combining pronounced stony minerality with citrus and orchard fruit and a subtle herbal and floral lift. A firm structural backbone and vibrant acidity give the wine precision and longevity, while the overall profile remains balanced and expressive, delivering a powerful yet finely etched Grosses Gewächs with clarity and poise.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
