The producer

Established in 1890, La Rioja Alta is one of Rioja’s most respected historic estates.

Created in 1890, La Rioja Alta is unusual for that time as a consortium of several families established as a company. There have been several changes among the shareholders, most notably the merger of one of the founders of the company – Ardanza – with La Rioja Alta. “Ardanza” was the top reserva of the range for decades. The signature of La Rioja Alta is the use of American oak for all the range – a range notable for the high quality at all levels from the crianza Vina Alberdi through to the three Gran Reservas.

The pinnacle wines are named for the year of merger with Ardanza – Gran Reserva 904 (dropping the “1”) and the year of founding – Gran Reserva 890.

The wine

A flagship Gran Reserva: elegant, balanced, and built for ageing.

Named after the year of the merger with Ardanza – 1904 – this is one of La Rioja Alta’s two flagship wines. Made from 90% Tempranillo with 10% Graciano, cuvee 904 matures for 4-5 years in American oak cask and a further 4 years in bottle. A medium bodied, immensely elegant, and balanced wine, with lots of freshness and red fruit, with further spice and earthy complexity.

This shows incredible refinement and complexity for Rioja, with aromas of dried strawberries, orange peel, cedar, sandalwood and subtle sweet spices. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate, delivering freshness, balance and length. The wine feels effortless yet persistent, with a polished texture and a long, savoury finish that continues to evolve in the glass. A classic Gran Reserva with precision and longevity. (2020)

97/100 Tim Atkin MW Reviewed: Nov 2021 Read review

A beautifully judged Gran Reserva that captures the elegance of the vintage. Red cherry and strawberry fruit are complemented by dried herbs, cedar, vanilla and subtle balsamic notes. The palate is finely structured, with supple tannins, refreshing acidity and a gentle savoury undertow. Nothing feels forced here; instead, the wine unfolds gradually, revealing detail and harmony. A wine of restraint, finesse and long ageing potential. (2021)

96/100 Robert Parker / The Wine Advocate Reviewed: Sep 2020 Read review

The 2015 Gran Reserva 904 is elegant and nuanced, showing aromas of red berries, dried flowers, tobacco leaf and orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity that give the wine excellent balance and persistence. There is a sense of freshness throughout, despite the warmth of the vintage, and the long, savoury finish confirms its classical style and ageing capability. (2020)
