The producer

Based in Flagey, but with six Grand Cru holdings from Flagey to Gevrey, the triple-named estate has come into its own under current generation director Claire Fleurot and her talented young winemaker Thomas Colladot. Thomas’ mother is a Coquard, and from Morey, while the Loison side of the family is from Flagey.

With a deep belief that great wines are created in the vineyard, Coquard-Loison-Fleurot has a stellar collection of Burgundian terroirs to work with including 0.18ha Grands Echezeaux, 1.29ha Echezeaux, 0.64ha Clos de Vougeot, 1.17ha Clos de la Roche, 0.17ha Clos St Denis and 0.32ha Charmes-Chambertin.

The style is still evolving but with a light extraction and a definite but delicate use of new oak that makes for elegant wines showing fruit purity and great terroir expressions. Should we call this domaine a future star of Burgundy when the wines are already held in great respect? And are in great demand? Let’s just say it’s a star producer still on the rise.

The wine

Dom. Coquard Loison Fleurot’s Chambolle-Musigny (Village) is drawn from several small parcels within the commune of Chambolle-Musigny, reflecting the domaine’s emphasis on site expression rather than scale. The vineyards are modest in size—typical of the appellation—totalling only a few hectares, with individual plots often well under an acre, planted predominantly to mature Pinot Noir vines. These sites sit on the classic mid-slope exposures of Chambolle, generally east to south-east facing, which favour slow, even ripening while preserving freshness.

The soils are emblematic of Chambolle-Musigny: light, well-drained limestone and marl, with a high proportion of fractured limestone overlying shallow clay. This composition encourages deep root systems and naturally limits vigour, contributing to low yields and a strong mineral imprint. The domaine farms with a traditional Burgundian mindset, prioritising careful vineyard work and respect for the terroir, allowing these limestone-rich sites to articulate the finesse and transparency for which Chambolle-Musigny is renowned.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
