The producer

Château de Meursault is a historic and prestigious wine estate located in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, known for producing some of the region’s most esteemed white and red wines. The château dates back to the 11th century, and its vineyards, which span over 60 hectares, include holdings in some of the most renowned appellations, such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Pommard. Château de Meursault is celebrated for its commitment to traditional winemaking techniques, combined with modern innovations that enhance the expression of the unique terroirs. The estate’s wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and balance, with their white wines, particularly the Meursaults, offering rich, minerally profiles with vibrant acidity, while their reds, like those from Pommard, are structured, with deep fruit flavors and fine tannins. Under the current ownership of the Halley family, Château de Meursault continues to uphold its reputation for quality, producing wines that are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs around the world.

The wine

Château de Meursault’s Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is a classic expression of one of the appellation’s most revered climats, shaped profoundly by its terroir. Perrières sits on a gently sloping hillside above the village of Meursault, where relatively small, well-defined vineyard parcels rest on shallow, stony soils rich in limestone scree (“pierres”), which give the vineyard its name. These thin soils, combined with excellent drainage and a cool, elevated exposure, naturally limit vine vigor and concentrate the fruit, translating the land directly into the wine. The vineyard’s modest scale and meticulous cultivation allow the character of the site to shine through, producing a wine marked by precision, mineral tension, and a chalky, saline depth that reflects the rocky soils and long Burgundian heritage of this exceptional Premier Cru.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
