The producer

Barone Ricasoli stands as a venerable and esteemed Italian wine producer, nestled in the heart of Tuscany. With roots dating back to the 12th century, it holds the distinction of being the oldest winery in Italy and the fourth oldest globally. Founded by the Ricasoli family, the estate gained prominence under Baron Bettino Ricasoli, credited with formulating the original Chianti recipe in the 19th century. Renowned for its dedication to Chianti Classico, the vineyards predominantly feature Sangiovese grapes, echoing the estate's commitment to preserving the traditional character of the region. Beyond Chianti, Barone Ricasoli produces an array of wines, including Chianti Classico Riserva and premium blends, each crafted to express the unique terroir of its vineyards. Embracing sustainability, the estate combines history, tradition, and environmental consciousness in its winemaking practices.

The wine

Barone Ricasoli Colledila Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione stands as an exemplary Italian red wine originating from the esteemed Chianti region in Tuscany. Crafted exclusively from 100% Sangiovese grapes meticulously chosen and harvested from the estate's premier vineyards, this Gran Selezione undergoes an 18-month maturation process in French oak barrels. The result is a wine characterized by a robust flavor profile and an intense bouquet featuring notes of dark fruits, vanilla, and spice. The seamless and enduring finish underscores the wine's exceptional quality. Barone Ricasoli Colledila Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione embodies elegance and complexity, making it an ideal companion for indulgent culinary pairings or as a refined standalone sipping experience.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
