Overview

South Australia is Australia’s largest wine producing state, accounting for around 44% of the total vineyard here. Here we find many wine growing regions including Barossa, Coonawarra, Eden and Clare Valleys and the McLaren Vale. In terms of grape varieties South Australia is home to very diverse terroirs which produce outstanding examples of Shiraz (and related blends), Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling among many others.

Overview

South Australia is home to some of the oldest grapevines in the world (up to 180 years old), particularly in the Barossa Valley, which survived the great phylloxera outbreak that devastated vineyards across the world in the 19th century. These ancient vines contribute to the depth and complexity of South Australia's wines, making them highly sought after globally.

Key Grape Varieties

Shiraz dominates red wine production in all these sub regions, mostly in its own right and sometimes with sometimes blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre to produce the GSM blend as inspired by the Southern Rhone. Very occasionally Shiraz is also blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to create a Cabernet-Shiraz blend that is unique to Australia. Some excellent Cabernet Sauvignon is produced especially in Coonawarra but also in the Eden and Clare Valleys.

While South Australia is generally more famous for production of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and GSM blends, however, a few regions are very successfully producing Chardonnay, notably Adelaide Hills – especially the very cool southern and eastern parts of the region, which due to a combination of altitude and cool ocean breezes, is particularly well-suited to the early-ripening Chardonnay. South Australia’s arguably most famous and finest Chardonnay – Penfold’s Yattarna – is sourced from cool climate regions throughout the state.

For us there are four key sub regions of South Australia, noting that we also treat South Australia as a “region” in itself as some producers, like Penfolds, blend wines from material from several sub regions across the state.
