Langhe

Overview

Langhe is a regional denomination, in the Cuneo province of Piemonte, covering the land east of the Tanaro River and south of Alba. It encompasses the most famous appellations of the area, Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG – many of which producers make more approachable and “entry” level, fruit-forward wines under the Langhe DOC, but the DOC is also occasionally used by producers wishing to make wine from international grape varieties which are not allowed in the DOCGs.

Wine from the Langhe DOC – introduced in 1994 – can be red, white, or rose, and still, sparkling, passito, or novello (“newly released” or the region’s answer to Beaujolais). The most planted grape varieties in the area include the white Vermentino and Arneis, and red Nebbiolo and Dolcetto.
