Hugel & Fils

Hugel & Fils was founded, in Riquewihr, in 1639 and is entirely family owned and run, today by 12^th generation, Etienne Hugel. The family owns 25 hectares of vineyards, almost half of which are classified as Grand Cru, and buys grapes from growers of another 110 hectares of vineyards. All vineyards are planted only with the four noble Alsace grape varieties – Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Gewurztramier. The Hugel family is famous for pioneering the late harvested sweet styles – Vendange Tardive and Selection de Grains Nobles (SGN) – in Alsace, they were in fact, in 1984, involved in the drafting of the production laws, which today govern the two wine styles.

The wines are matured in a selection of stainless-steel tanks and large oak foudres; the exact choice of vessel depends on the vintage, quality levels and specific grape variety. Hugel & Fils are members of “Primum Familiae Vini” which is an exclusive group of some of the world’s most prestigious wine estates who together promotes the values of family producers.
