Chateau Clos Fourtet

Enviably located at the gates of the township of Saint-Emilion and neighbouring Chateau Canon, Clos Fourtet’s 20 hectares of vineyards are planted to 80% Merlot with roughly 10% of each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and are farmed using sustainable methods with an increasing eye to biodynamic methods.

In the Middle Ages Clos Fourtet was originally a fort and sits atop 13ha of old limestone quarries, attesting to the fine composition of its soil, and also holding some of the most extensive underground cellars in the region.

Owned, and run well, by the Lurton family until 2001, when Paris businessman Philippe Cuvelier bought the estate and subsequently lifted the bar even higher, fully modernizing the cellars and replanting large sections of the vineyards.

Clos Fourtet is a lush and fleshy, yet mineral-driven, Merlot-based Saint-Emilion that offers a wonderful mouthful of ripe fruits and velvety tannins and the ability to age for decades. Clos Fourtet is classified as ‘Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe’.
